Go Git 'Em Angela!

It is so refreshing to see a world political leader, a female leader at that, stepping up to the plate when others seem hesitant to do so. A coworker of mine always says that we need to be wary of the Germans as they can still take over the world. You know what, if the idea of taking over the world means challenging said world to do the right thing, then I am on board.

Merkel seems alright, and it is good that she is pushing for rich nations to lead the way in better environmental practices. You know, she's conservative - but that doesn't seem to always mean denialist crazy in her part of the world.

'Sides, she sorta stole my heart with the Bush shrug.

Conservative...well, she's not the German green party. I will go with that. In the grand scheme of things, she is challenging the country. And she is not Bavaria conservative so you have to give her that.

*And* you totally have to give her the Bush shrug.

I got my initial impression of her as a conservative from talking with some German friends, but to be quite frank (pardon the pun), I don't understand the German political system well enough to know what their calling her conservative means. This Wikipedia tells me that "As a female politician from a centre right party, and a scientist, Merkel has been compared by many in the English language press as well as the German press to former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher." It also mentions that she is chairwoman of the Christian Democratic Union and that she "... came out in favour of the U.S. invasion of Iraq, describing it as "unavoidable" and accusing Chancellor Gerhard Schröder of anti-Americanism." Yet, I am very aware that all of these things might still make her most similar to one of our "liberals."
