Blog for Choice 2009

I'm breaking the silence here for Blog for Choice Day!

The theme is "What is your top pro-choice hope for President Obama and/or the new Congress?"

I'll keep this really simple -- My hope is that everything is done to ensure that Roe v. Wade is not overturned. I want Obama to select Supreme Court Justices that will actually take women's rights, especially women's choice, seriously.

It is the 36th anniversary of Roe v. Wade. More than three decades have passed and yet we are still having this conflict, why?! It doesn't get much simpler than it is a woman's choice. Period. The end.

I have gone back and forth in the past about what will happen if Roe v. Wade is overturned. It was my Women's Studies Senior Thesis for goodness sake! But I'm tired of making my brain go there. Overturning Roe v. Wade just shouldn't be an option. With news of underground abortions going on (honestly, I couldn't write about the Dominican women and Cytotec b/c it was just too close to home), I really don't have the mental energy to listen to reasons why a conscience rule is necessary.

So that's my hope-- plain and simple. What's yours?

This just in, the DHHS believe that Obama's order halting new Bush regulations applies to the "conscience" rule!

Obama has been making me happy - its good news about the overturning of the Global Gag Rule and the halting of the "Conscience" Rule. As for what I want... well, of course I want womens' right to make their own reproductive choices protected. I'd also like to see more compassionate and intelligent discussion take place - no more air quotes when talking about womens' health, no more pretending that these decisions are easy or happen in a vacuum. We need to acknowledge that more women would be able to make the choice to become mothers if there were affordable health and child care, if there were more support for women and families. We've let others focus the debate too long, we need to stop letting ourselves be baited.

Hello,
I came across your blog not to long ago and I really love it. I run a blog for a few introductory women's and gender studies classes in Charleston, SC. The whole reason for my blog is so that the students will have a safe place each semester to express their views and opinions on feminism. For most of these students feminism is a completely foreign concept, and sometimes they except it whole heartedly and sometimes they dont. So the reason that I was writing to you is to ask if you would follow our blog, it would mean a lot to me and the students.

The site is wearethewave.blogspot.com

Thank you,
Caitlin
